Week ending 23rd February 2018

First week back after half term has been great!
We have started learning a new fiction story called 'Owl babies' which we have used to make a prediction of what we think might happen, we discussed the new language (red words), punctuation used and how the different characters might have felt at different parts of the story. We then created our own story maps using words and pictures to retell the story. Next week, we will be changing parts of the story using our own ideas.
In maths this week we have been immersed in measurements. We started measuring using cubes and comparing different objects and lines with mathematical language; short/long, shorter/longer, tall/taller, longer/shorter. We then moved on to using 15 cm and 30 cm rulers to measure different objects and lines. We also discussed when each ruler, as well as a metre ruler, would be most appropriate, to be used to measure different things. The children have made great progress over the course of the week and reflected on their learning using a success criteria; identifying what they have learnt and what they need to work on, with support, next time.
Our new science focus is to learn about plants. We started the topic by looking in the school field for flowers,  identifying their features. We learnt about sowing a seed and how they are all different. In pairs, we have sown a seed ourselves so we will track how well they grow over the next coming weeks.
On Thursday, we took to the stage once again to showcase some of our learning to  parents. It was fantastic to see so many supportive faces in the audience and wonderful to see the children proudly share what they have enjoyed and learnt. We made a short video clip to share some of learning in Porthcothan-enjoy!
