April has been another busy but fantastic month in Pentire class. At the beginning of the month, the children enjoyed a superb last week of the spring term. We continued working hard on our maths, reading, writing and topic until the last day of the term. However, as the children have worked hard all term, the class enjoyed a treat afternoon where they participated in their favourite art and sports activities all afternoon. Another enjoyable afternoon we had this week was the parent open afternoon where the children designed their own town using a variety of map symbols. The afternoon was rounded off with Pentire class being invited to watch the rock steady music festival.
In maths, we have been learning about properties of shapes, practising the following skills: calculating missing angles, identifying properties in 3D shapes, calculating angles in quadrilaterals and building 3D shapes using nets. As the month draws to a close, the class have moved onto position and direction, learning how to plot coordinates and translate and reflect shapes. It has been great to see the children determined and confident with their learning in maths.
In English, we have been finishing our persuasive letters, applying all of our persuasive writing skills to produce the final draft of our letters. The class our now moving back to fiction writing. Our aim over the next 3 to 4 weeks is to produce our best writing of the year: a narrative full of suspense, description and creative, interesting characters. The children have been given their writing targets which they will be working towards in the coming weeks in order to enable them to show off their best writing yet!
Our new topic for the first half term in summer will be ‘fantastic journeys’. As well as taking on a journey theme in our narrative writing, the children will also be looking at journeys in their topic lessons. For geography, we will be continuing to develop our place knowledge. Art will see the children apply new techniques for sketching and painting animals and settings around the world. For DT, we will be journeying back in time to the Second World War, constructing and testing our own models of Anderson shelters which will tie in with our literacy work. We look forward to another busy but fun-filled month of learning in Pentire.
