June 2019

The children have been practicing reading and writing set 2 and 3 sounds as well as spotting special friends in nonsense words. They completed the Phonics Screening check with confidence and wisdom. We are very proud- well done all!

In Literacy we have learnt the story of 'The Enormous Turnip' using actions to retell the events of the story like storytellers. We looked at the structure of the story by boxing up the events that happen. We then began to change parts of the story to use our own ideas. We did this by recording our initial ideas on large pieces of paper, in small groups. We then looked at the language used in the story and then discovered synonyms.
We discovered synonyms for 'enormous', 'little' and 'pulled' and planned them in to our new story.

In Maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of the value of digits in a 2-digit number. We have used counters, cubes, numicon, dienes to help us represent the value of the digits in different ways.

In Science, we have been investigating different types of plants. We have learnt that plants need sunlight, carbon dioxide, the right temperature, time and water to grow and survive. We also discovered that plants grow from a seed or a bulb and that some plants don't get planted but that the seeds travel to different places by the weather or animals. We went for a plant hunt to look for wild flowers and then a tree hunt to find evergreen and deciduous trees.

For Art we each chose a leaf and then pressed in to clay to make an imprint of the veins from a leaf- we are going to allow them to dry and then add colour.

At the end of June we thoroughly enjoyed a visit from the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association. We took part in a workshop which explored where food comes from and how it becomes food that we eat. We were able to feel different types of grains and wheats, practiced milking Demelza the goat, feel cow hides and complete a quiz as a class.

Well done Mawgan Porth for working so hard and enthusiastically this month.
