January 2019

We have been excited to start our new topic on Tudor Explorers. We have been learning about the lives of sailors and the dangers they faced on the sea. We investigated The Mary Rose in History lessons and have choreographed a dance called The Tempest based on one of Shakespeare's plays.

Our class text has been Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo which followed the diary accounts of a boy who was marooned on an island and looked after by a mysterious old man. We wrote our own diary accounts about being shipwrecked and made a display in our classroom.

Our Art sessions have been based on Renaissance Art which is from the same time period as the Tudors. We looked at the sculptures and murals painted by Michelangelo and had a go at painting images of bible characters ourselves. We sat underneath the desks and painted upside down like Michelangelo did in the Sistine Chapel. It was harder than it looked.
The class have been learning about managing risks in PHSE. WE have been discussing the dangers associated with Smoking and Drinking. The children have looked at the effects these two legal drugs have on people's health and well-being.

The children wrote facts, designed warning posters and had discussions about their thoughts and feelings. Some of the facts were shocking and some were surprising. The class had opportunities to ask questions about what they had learnt. They had a very sensible attitude when learning about such a serious topic.
