January 2019

Welcome to the first blog of 2019.

It's been a busy start to the new year.

We have started our new topic of Jungle Animals. The dress up day was enjoyed by everyone. Since then we have been exploring the animals the children came as. We have made the faces of those animals and written non-fiction sentences about them and what they do.
The children have really enjoyed using the wild animals scenario where they have been exploring role playing with animals and lots of grouping of the animals. There has also been quite a lot of Lion King play.

We have started learning our class story 'Monkey See, Monkey Do'.

PE in dress up week was different movements to match animals, e.g. stomping elephants, fluttering butterflies, buzzing flies and swinging monkeys. Some movements we made up ourselves, others we copied from dance videos with suitable music. We even had some jungle animal music with prowling & leaping percussion beats.

We had started our music sessions earlier by watching the 'conductor' and making the instruments quieter or louder following the gestures he made. Most enjoyment was had from the loud playing! (see video below)

We have also started a PE block on Gymnastics. First we warm up with different movements around the hall - walking, skipping, jogging (see video below) - then we balance. So far we have done large body part balances - on our backs, tummies, sides and bottoms.
We will continue with balances, balancing on equipment and climbing & jumping - tune in next month!

In Maths we have been measuring & ordering by height and working on using our numbers in number sentences.
