Treviglas’ Literacy Leaders Celebrated by College
Over the course of the past term, students from Treviglas’ Year 7 have visited Goonhavern and St Columb Major primary schools as part of their Literacy Leadership programme. The students worked with primary students from Years 1-4, using their phonics knowledge to support the younger students with their reading development, and then enjoyed the opportunity to share books with a partner to show the enjoyment that reading can offer. This week, the students were presented with their Literacy Leadership badges as the first step on their leadership ladder.
The Year 7 students and students at the primary schools thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Literacy Leaders were able to revise their phonics knowledge to apply to their secondary English sessions and, by the end of the programme, could even spell antidisestablishmentarianism!
Oli Frith, Year 7, said, ‘It was very enjoyable working with different children and teaching them to read. I enjoyed being responsible for the younger students in my group and developed my leadership skills, as well as showing them how enjoyable reading actually is!’
Mrs. Rebecca Drake, Leader of Learning for English, commented, ‘I am so proud of all of our Year 7 Literacy Leaders. They show the Treviglas community spirit at its best!’
The literacy leadership programme is just one part of an extensive leadership programme at Treviglas, in which students are recognised for the roles they take within the college and wider community, be it sports, modern languages, literacy or the arts.
