April 2019

April was a wonderful month, we had fun learning about different musicians and artists as our topic. We even had local artist John Dyer and his talented daughter Martha-Lily in for a morning of art and music.
The whole school took part in a musical assembly with Martha-Lily, using their hands, laps and feet to create the sounds of rain and storm in a rain forest.
The Year 4 were then lucky enough to observe how John paints, and then having a go themselves at painting a rain forest scene. The children used their imagination to create and design their scene in their minds before starting to paint, no sketching was completed first.
The children were then treated to a lovely piece of music played by Martha-Lily on her flute.
All of their wonderful paintings are now up on display in the cloakroom making it feel just like they are in a rain forest every time they walk past.
We also had a lovely afternoon in April where parents were welcomed into the classroom. During this week it was a whole school Geography week, so the children were learning about the different symbols that are used on Ordnance Survey maps, understanding the symbols and how to use them, identifying the human and physical geographical differences between UK and other European countries such as Russia. During the parent's afternoon the children were tasked with re-designing the town St Columb Major, thinking about what they may need to survive in the town, what they needed to ensure the town was safe and where to place the new landmarks. Some children even had to design their own symbol for the map such as a rocket launch pad!
Alongside these some children opted to join in with the school's cross country event one afternoon, the children were determined to run or jog all the distance and tried their best.
All in all, April was exciting and fascinating.
